The Bavarian Forest is an densely forested mountain region of unspoilt beauty in south-eastern Germany. The highest peak of the Bavarian Bohemian mountain ridge is the Great Arber at 1,456 m. Bavarian Forest: Background and Basics
The Bavarian Forest has a continental climate with long, snowy winters which provide the perfect environment for indigenous species like eagle owls, ravens, otters, hazel grouse and three-toed woodpeckers. Many of these animals can be seen in the wildlife enclosure near Neuschönau. The Bavarian Forest National Park, founded in 1970, is the oldest and largest national park in Germany. This area together with the Upper Bavarian Forest Natural Park, the Czech Šumava National Park and the surrounding protected land, form the largest unbroken area of protected forest in Central Europe.
