It is birthplace of the famous left poet, Jiannis Ritsos, who called Monnemvassia ''Greeces Gibraltar''. It can be reached by land from Gefira (bridge), a narrow piece of land which can be passed in 15 minutes. Monemvassia can only be reached along the south coast route, which is not easy to access the lower part, the ''Kastro'' (stronghold) and from there to the older, more predominantly medieval stronghold on the rocky massif. The Basilica Aiya Sofia is situated inland.
