Lesser known than Ostend and Antwerp, the city of Namur in southern Belgium holds its own thanks to its colourful history. Strategically located at the confluence of the Sambre and the Meuse rivers, the Romans, Merovingians and Hapsburgs are amongst the colonial powers that at one time laid claim to the city. This historic destination is best explored on foot and with well-equipped holiday homes, holiday rentals, holiday houses and holiday apartments in plentiful supply, Namur provides the ideal base from which to explore the French speaking region of Belgian Wallonia of which it is the capital. Brussels, Ostend and Antwerp are all within easy reach of the city.
A walk back in time
Namur's wealth of historical attractions include the Citadelle de Namur, a military fortification orginally established in the Roman era which is known for its maze of underground escape routes and tunnels and remained of strategic importance until the Second World War. Saint Aubain Cathedral dates from the 18th century and its Italianate architecture is unique in the region. The cathedral's distinctive belfry is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other sites of interest which can be visited when renting a holiday home or holiday house in Namur include the Felicien Rops Museum, devoted to the life and work of the popular local 19th century painter and the Museum of Ancient Namur Arts dedicated to the region's archeology.

Every September the Combat de l'Échasse d'Or (Fight for the Golden Stilt) takes place in which Namur's inhabitants dress in medieval costumes and battle each other on stilts. The city also hosts the Namur International Festival of French-Speaking Film, the Nam'in'Jazz Festival and the Verdur Rock Festival as well as the traditional Fêtes de Wallonies where you can sample 'Peket', a local drink made from juniper.
