THE COMPREHENSORY OF FANO

Fano is a well-known seaside resort in the north of the Marche, famous for its Carnival, the oldest in Italy, which is celebrated with allegorical floats, masks and costumes. Among the typical elements that characterize the Carnival of Fano there are: the jet, or the throwing of tons of sweets from allegorical floats, the Arabita Music, a group of musicians who in addition to normal instruments use objects of various kinds to produce music, and the parades of floats, imposing constructions of papier-mâché and foam rubber up to 16 meters high and covering about 2 km.

BATHING TOURIST OFFER
The coast is divided into Lido and Saxony (North Fano, North Saxony and Torrette are Blue Flag Beaches 2019), both with low coasts, the first is sandy, while the second is gravelly. Lido and Sassonia are child-friendly beaches, thanks also to the presence of inflatables and the numerous activities that are organized on the seafront. The southern coast is divided, however, into Torrette (Blue Flag 2019), Ponte Sasso and Metaurilia, the latter founded after a land reclamation work in 1938.
There are several campsites located along the Adriatica state road from Fano to Marotta di Mondolfo.

The long cycle path of the Adriatic coast runs along the seafront, connecting Fano to Pesaro for twelve kilometers.
In Fano there is an important fishing port, moreover, lovers of nautical tourism can count on the well-equipped tourist port of Marina dei Cesari, a modern and functional dock where many boats moor.

WHAT TO VISIT
In the historic center, the most interesting attraction is the monumental Arch of Augustus, which has always been a symbol of the city of Fano and gate of the ancient Via Flaminia: built on the point where the Via Flaminia joins the decumanus maximum of the city, the monument it dates, through the inscription of the frieze, to 9 A.D.

Other sites not to be missed are the sixteenth-century Fountain of Fortuna and the nineteenth-century Teatro della Fortuna, with

horseshoe, three tiers of boxes, balcony gallery and capable of 595 seats. Also of great importance is the Malatesta Fortress, bordered by escarpments with sturdy corner towers and the Keep; the Malatesta Court, seat of the Civic Museum and the Pinacoteca, which boasts, among others, works by Domenichino, Guido Reni, Guercino, Guerrieri, Mattia Preti; the Cathedral, which preserves a pulpit and the Baroque Nolfi Chapel from the 17th century; the Church of Santa Maria Nuova; the Baroque Church of San Pietro in Valle; the Church of Sant’Agostino and the Tombs of the Malatesta, a true masterpiece of neo-Gothic art, housed in the porch of the Church of San Francesco.

The characteristic Camaldolese Hermitage of Monte Giove is worth visiting in the outskirts of the city.

TYPICALITY AND EVENTS
Among the gastronomic specialties not to be missed is the Brodetto alla Fano, a typical dish of Adriatic seafood cuisine.
Famous is the Moretta Fano, a drink based on coffee, rum, anise and cognac, which originated among the sailors and fishermen of the port, who took correct and very hot drinks to warm up and reinvigorate themselves before going to sea.

In addition to the Carnival, the most important events that take place in Fano during the year are the Antiques Market Fair, which traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of each month and the previous Saturday, Fano Jazz by the sea (July) , Fano dei Cesari, historical re-enactment of Roman Fano (July) and the International Festival of Brodetto and Fish Soups (September).
