THE PESARO DISTRICT

Overlooking the sea and crossed by the Foglia river, Pesaro is a seaside resort located between two coastal hills: Monte Ardizio to the east-south-east and Monte San Bartolo to the west-north-west, which gives its name to the Parco Naturale del Monte San Bartolo and offers a good seven kilometers of sandy beach between equipped and free coast (the Ponente / Levante Sottomonte beaches have obtained the 2018 Blue Flag for over 6 km),

A centuries-old tradition of seaside hospitality is linked to the sea which pays particular attention to families and children.
Since 2010 Pesaro has dedicated the White Midnight for children to the little ones, the flagship event of the summer tourist programme, and some laboratory activities of reading aloud right on the city's beaches are also dedicated to children, organized by the Baia Flaminia Library.
The seaside offer includes, thanks to the particular conformation of the territory, with the low and narrow sandy coast to the south and to the north with the reliefs of San Bartolo and Ardizio that reach down to the sea, establishments easily reachable from the hotels and from the historic centre, and small bays surrounded by nature.
There are various cycle paths: the Bicipolitana is an itinerary reserved for bikers that connects different areas of the city. Special signage indicates the routes. Lines of different colors are provided, each of which leads in various directions.
The Pesaro-Fano cycle path runs along the entire coast in a southerly direction, up to Fosso Sejore; being at sandy level, it serves the bathing establishments that insist on the Levante beach and is very convenient for those who want to reach the beach by bicycle.

WHAT TO VISIT
Among the buildings of religious architecture we highlight: the Cathedral, erected on the remains of a late Roman building, which boasts an interesting mosaic heritage; the Church of Sant'Agostino, which preserves a remarkable Gothic-Venetian portal on the facade and important paintings inside; the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, built in the XIII century by the Malatesta family and rebuilt in Baroque style.
Among the noteworthy monuments and museums not to be missed are: the fifteenth-century Rocca Costanza, a square-plan work, strengthened by cylindrical towers and surrounded by a large moat, formerly used as a prison; the Palazzo Ducale, now the seat of the Prefecture, built by Alessandro Sforza in the second half of the 15th century; the Oliveriano Archaeological Museum and the Civic Museums, with the Pinacoteca and the Ceramics Museum; located inside Palazzo Mosca, the Sonosphere, a space designed for the immersive use of three-dimensional sound and audio-visual contents; Casa Rossini, which preserves documentary material, including prints and memorabilia related to the life and work of the great composer; the Rossini National Museum, which tells the story of the life, the man and the greatness of the artist but also the relevance of the work of Gioachino Rossini; the Teatro Rossini, where the Rof (Rossini Opera Festival) takes place every year, an opera music festival that has been held every year since 1980 in August in Pesaro, the birthplace of Gioachino Rossini. ROF is also the name of the Foundation set up in 1994 to support the Rossini Foundation in the theatrical, musicological and editorial recovery of Rossini's production.

The maritime tradition is well documented by the Washington Patrignani Museum, which collects in two sections the testimonies relating to the history of the Pesaro navy.
A striking contemporary sculpture is the Palla by Arnaldo Pomodoro, a bronze sphere created in 1998 by the well-known sculptor. Villino Ruggeri is a beautiful Art Nouveau building; not far from Pesaro, on Colle San Bartolo, stands Villa Imperiale, built starting from 1530.
In the San Bartolo Park, in the Pesaro area, Casteldimezzo, Fiorenzuola di Focara and Santa Marina Alta are picturesque hamlets overlooking the blue Adriatic Sea.

Among the typical traditional dishes and products we point out the Pesaro-style cappelletti, prepared in broth; tagliatelle and cannelloni "alla Rossini", a fresh pasta dish dedicated to the great composer; the bostrengo, or boiled rice mixed with dried figs, raisins, honey, alchermes, cornmeal, cocoa, apples, pears, etc. Among the second courses we mention the famous red mullets with ham, stuffed cuttlefish, Garagoli, shellfish sautéed in 'oil with various spices and veal olivettes, breaded and fried stuffed meat dumplings.
A gastronomic "gem" is the Pizza Rossini, for the particular combination of pizza and mayonnaise. The base is a simple daisy, to which hard-boiled eggs and rigorously hand-made mayonnaise are added.
